Treating Chronic Pain and Joint Instability

At Meridian Integrated, we focus on both conventional and traditional treatments to help you address chronic pain, and to create a pain management plan that works for you.

What is Pain?

Most chronic pain is caused by intense damaging stimulus or wear and tear over a prolonged period of time. It is often associated with tissue damage (muscle, tendon, ligament, cartilage, bone).

Types of Pain:

Nociceptive: Stimulation of peripheral nerve fibers (outside the spinal cord), including hot/cold, tearing, crushing, chemical burns etc.

Neuropathic: Damage or disease affecting the nervous system, including burning, tingling, electrical types of pains.

Chronic Pain is often indicative of ongoing or persistent damage somewhere in the body. There are positive aspects of chronic pain as an indicator of the healing process and as a protective mechanism against further damage. Chronic pain, however, can significantly reduce a person's quality of life and day to day functions.

Why does Chronic Pain exist?

  • Limited blood flow to tendons, ligaments, cartilage.
  • Less fibroblastic activity
  • Less collagen deposition
  • Suppression of healing at the time of injury
  • Degeneration over years from a “weakened structure”
  • Poor nutrition
  • High stress
  • Lack of sleep, etc.
